What You Can Expect
Travel along the picturesque road lined with palm trees to reach the village of Taqa. In former times, the village was known for its trade of incense and Arabian horses from its harbour which was guarded by Qasbar fort at the top of the cliff. A visit to the 19th century Taqa castle is recommended before proceeding to Sumhuram. At Sumhuram stop at the top of the hill for the stunning views overlooking the village and the Indian Ocean.
On the cliff of Khawr Rawri, the biggest of the Dhofar bays, you will find the ruins of the fortress and the palace of Sumhuram which is said to be the remains of the palace of the Queen Sheba. A UNESCO world heritage site, its port was one of the main hubs to dispatch frankincense, myrrh and slaves from the 1st to the 7th century.
Before heading to Mirbat, explore Bin Ali’s tomb with its white double domes and the surrounding cemetery of unusually shaped gravestones. End the journey at the beautiful natural springs of Ayn Razat and hidden caves.
